Different Fingerstyle Techniques for the Guitar

Fingerstyle guitar refers to the way in which one plays the guitar. This is done using a pick, your fingernails, or your fingertips. This is also different from flatpicking. Flatpicking is the process by which you strum individual notes on the guitar. The music which is meant for fingerstyle playing includes arepegios and chords. Other formats include hammering, and percussion playing.

The guitar has come a long way since its birth. It has evolved as a chordal piece or instrument. When you use your fingers while playing the guitar, you open up a wide range of musical chords available to you. Flamenco is a different type of playing style from the normal classical tradition. It has its own unique style and look. There are no technical restrictions when playing the classical fingerstyle however. This is one major advantage.

The nail fingerstyle guitar technique is a common classical fingerstyle guitar approach. Let us take a closer look at it. When playing the nail technique you are are going to want to rest the inside of your forearm on the top side of the guitar. You should keep your shoulder, arm, and hand all relaxed. You should also be able to reach the strings without any strain.

Keeping your fingers moving freely, do not let them get too close to the strings. This will cause your playing to get muffled in case you touch another string. Keep your hand a few centimeters away from the bridge of the guitar while playing. Use your thumb to play the bass strings and your other fingers to play the top and middle strings. Keep your fingers slightly bent or curved while doing this. This is the common nail technique used to play guitar.

When you play the fingerstyle technique, you can perform different musical elements at the same time. Fingerstyle allows you to play music by yourself which would require several band members to perform together. There are two main groups of fingerstyle. Most people agree that melodic fingerstyle and fingerpicking are seperate styles. Fingerpicking is a rhythm based style whereas the melodic version is more of a collaboration of both coloration and orchestra effects.

Fingerpicking can also be called pattern picking or thumb picking. Some people even call it an alternating bass. Fingerpicking refers to the style of music. It also refers to the type of music as well. It can be used to play jazz, blues, and some kinds of folk music. Normally, the thumb will keep the tempo while the other fingers play the melody of the song. Your thumb almost acts as a metronome here. There are two other major styles in guitar.

The ragtime guitar style was sort of taken from the ragtime piano method. Piano songs were written for the guitar and this style sort of took hold with players worldwide. The other form of guitar is the American primitive guitar. This style started with John Fahey. This kind of playing is used in folk music and songs of that nature. It uses a lot of pattern and thumb picking.
