Flatpick Guitar Technique
Strumming the guitar is a key component of playing any song on this instrument. There are two types of guitar strokes in a strum. They consist of 
the down stroke and the up stroke. When you are playing a stroke, you only want to strum the strings just in front of the bridge (hole) of the guitar. When strumming a chord, make sure that you play all of the required strings for that chord. The direction of the stroke depends on which kind of stroke is indicated.
What do you use to strum a guitar? Well your best options are either a pick or your finger. However I highly suggest to use a pick. The flatpick guitar technique consists of using, well a pick. This is a triangular piece of plastic which is used to pluck the strings of a guitar. Most guitarists today use a pick. It also performs best when used to play or create rythmic patterns.
To properly hold the guitar pick you should first of all be relaxed. Next, place the pick between your pointer finger and your thumb. The pick should be directly facing downwards. Do not let the pick turn as you strum the guitar. Keep it steady. You want your grip to be strong enough to stop the pick from moving or slipping out of your hands when playing the guitar. Do not tense up your hand though.
Rest your right arm on the guitar but be careful to keep it away from the strings. You do not want to accidentally mute the sound of your song. Patience, learning, and relaxtion are required here. Take some time out now to practice strumming the guitar. Hold the pick steady and firm but do not tense up. Keep yourself relaxed and loose.
Picks are created in a variety of shapes and sizes. Depending on what you want done, the shape of a pick can influence your playing style. It can also influence your movement. The thickness of a pick can affect the tone of the sound produced as well. A thicker pick is generally used on an electric guitar whereas a thinner pick is used for acoustic guitar players.
